But I’m not doing it to be seen or necessarily to share with the world. I’m showing up for me. Because the only way to ever know deep satisfaction and fulfillment as a creative is to create what you want to create. When we arrive at the end, to know we made what we wanted to make. Some people will love it and some people will certainly hate it, but more torturous than the pain inflicted by others is the pain of holding your unique visions and creations within.
So go forth and create, not for others. Do it for you. Only for you. Because that’s what you’re going to see more of from me - the things I want to create. Whether or not it makes sense. Especially when it doesn’t make sense.

I think so much of the dominant narrative, on both sides, is off-base. I think we have a huge problem with identity politics. I’ve always considered myself an independent, as I think most of us technically should be if we would stop siding with a party. We cannot and should not clearly be divided into two parties. We are too unique for that.
On my 35th birthday last week, I received a card that said “even though we see the world differently, I still think you’re special.” I would expect that each and every one of us see the world differently, and we need to detach from the idea that we should all hold the same beliefs or values or that we’re all going to agree that issues should be handled by one of the dominant solutions floating around the media based on the great party divide.
I think this day is no different. A day I’ve always had mixed feelings about, along with Thanksgiving. Yet I look at why that is and question my own personal narrative. I think there’s nuance here too. We are both a country of freedom and a country that’s lost meaning in what it really means to be free.
Neither the government nor political parties can grant us freedom or the answers to our problems. We must find it within ourselves first and foremost.
And of course, I continue to explore all these thoughts for myself. How I see the world today will certainly change, just as you too are allowed to change your mind.

I’m always on an inner journey. That inner journey right now looks like remembering more deeply how to be free from categorization, free from having it all make sense, and free from the boxes they try to put business in. Now that I have this body of work as an artist, it’s time to revisit what it looks like to share that work while letting all the other sides of my wild, creative nature come through. After all, that’s how I feel I can mostly be described without being boxed in - wildly creative, and I desire to inspire others to live a wildly creative life by fully expressing ourselves, doing meaningful work with our hands, coming closer to nature, and finding wisdom in old and ancestral ways. Currently, my by-hand creative work expresses itself as fine art, but there’s so much more beneath the surface I want to share with you.

There’s pressure to have a clearly defined style as an artist. This pressure leads to an internal battle and more challenging creative path and process. Landing on our style can certainly have the benefit of guiding us in our creations and leave us feeling like we’re creating something that’s ours. It can also be highly limiting, taking away our creative freedom and preventing us from playing and expanding our creativity. It’s another way societal expectations limit our fullest expression.
I choose a middle path. I choose to have some clearly defined elements of my style, but I also choose to work across mediums, continue to experiment and expand my vision and be unpredictable. I’m not here to be figured out or put into a box, as much as the pressure to do so is there. It’s true in art and in life.

I don’t like plastic in my house, and I don’t like plastic in my art. I’m not a fan of acrylic paint not only because of the fake, plastic binder used in it, but also because I hate the gummy feeling of the paint. I love working with oil and gouache paints because of how beautifully they flow and their creamy texture. I love how oil paints let me work more slowly too, because we can all stand to embrace more slow living - and painting.
When I started oil painting, I chose to keep it non-toxic. I don’t use turpentine or mineral spirits - just a little walnut oil. I’m choosing non-toxic pigments as well.
This is only the start. I bought some starter ingredients to make my own paints, but I’m also going to begin to forage my own pigments. I love rocks, I love DIY and handmade, and I love natural elements, so this is the natural next step for me.

But what really gets me, what makes me swoon inside, is a loose and painterly style. That cuts straight to the depths of my soul. Not only that, but what I love so much about art is the ability to cut loose and break the rules. To get messy. The organizing of information as a graphic designer kept me in check while my wild soul yearned to break free.
As much as I love it the look of it, I’m not sure I want to create work that is clean and orderly. The process of creating such work isn’t as gratifying for me as is the process of being messy and free. I’m continuing to explore what this will look like moving forward in my art by working on some mixed media studies. Be sure to catch my stories if you want to watch that journey.

In the past, my studio had a tendency to be overcome with feelings of stagnancy, and I would no longer want to spend my time there. Over the past couple of years, I’ve focused on turning it into a space that feels like a reflection of me and that’s filled with beauty to inspire me - objects from nature, beautiful vintage finds, dark and cozy with pops of color. I’ve restricted the tech to one corner to keep it a sacred space of creation. Now, it’s become a place I love to spend my time - where I never grow tired of spending my time.">

This collection of paintings is so meaningful to me as I feel like I really tapped into my inner vision and the depths of my soul. Each painting represents a part of the inner journey of not only creating the work we’re meant to but uncovering true self-expression.
The things worth doing will reach deep into you and light up the darkest corners of your heart and feel like stepping into an expansive embrace, as this work has done for me. It’s my dream that we all know this feeling, and that this art is one way to experience it.

I think it’s so interesting that this is our reaction to the darkness. It ties back to our assumption that the darkness, the shadow, difficult times, etc. are negative and serve no purpose.
It's my belief that it's our darkness and our challenges that can be the source of our deepest creativity. I believe that within our darkest corners lies our greatest potential. I don’t believe our darkness is something to be feared but something to dig into.
To me, the darkness is beautiful, and I literally cannot work in a lighter way. My soul speaks to the dark. The dark speaks to my soul. I find comfort and nourishment in it. It’s where I find my deepest and fullest expression.
It’s my hope that my dark work not only speaks to others who find the darkness lovely but also helps expand our awareness of what it really means to visit the dark places and break free of the idea that only love, light, and positivity are “good”.">

Where I ended up heading with it required I order some supplies I didn’t have on hand nor could buy locally. While I wait for those, I’m going to continue to practice and experiment and see where I ultimately land. I’m planning to officially start my 100 days once I have all the materials in my hands. At that time, I’ll also announce the theme for my project and the way it weaves together.

Each year, the rate at which I grow and change speeds up, and 2021 was no exception. If you know me in real life, well, you don’t know me anymore, or rather, you likely never really knew me to begin with.
I know many of us have been changed by these last two years. If you’re ready to fully step into your next becoming and explore creative and unconventional living, I’ve created a space for that over at @thehouseoflostarts.
If you’ve followed me on here for some time, you may find following me is no longer a fit for you. I don’t know yet exactly where I’ll be heading with this space, but I can tell you, some things are going to be different. If I gave any fucks before, I give even fewer now.

If you caught my stories, you know that I’ve been creatively blocked - also evidenced from my absence in sharing. But now I have tons of ideas lined up and three paintings in the works. I have a lot to keep me going until suddenly I’m caught by the next block.
There’s no need to fear the block. You will always get through it so long as you remain devoted to your creative work. And that doesn’t mean always working it, but sometimes taking a break from it and getting some fresh air and fresh ideas. Because a creative block isn’t really missing out on creating like it sometimes feels like while we’re in it. It’s an inevitable part of the creative process, and it actually serves your creative growth.

And it’s fucking scary to share when you get there, to the work that feels like yours. Because suddenly you’re very protective of it. You’re worried about what if someone steals or copies your art. Unfortunately, that’s part of life as a creative.
For anyone who doesn’t know, ALL creative work is protected by copyright. This shit really needs to be taught to everyone in school. Copying is not flattery. It’s stealing. If you want to share something another created, ask for permission first, and always, always, always give credit to the creator and link back to them.
If you didn’t already know, now you do. Don’t be the asshole who steals. Don’t.

I started this because I had been focusing mostly on my illustrative art and wanted to make more space for fine art. I wanted to get what I got out of the last 100 Day Project - making a lot of art within a short period and with constraints to help improve my skills, find my style, and make good art I’m proud to sell.
By paintings 15 and 16, I really feel like I’m onto it. It happened so much quicker with my fine art than my illustrative style (which I still feel like I’m working on). That’s because all the progress I’ve made in my illustrative art translates into my fine art. I have a good handle on my colors, I know I like to make small, intricate marks, I know I like line work, especially in black. Bringing those elements in definitely helped.
I think it also helped to do the series of six similar flowers in different styles rather than doing a bunch of different compositions at the start. I may try something similar with my illustrations and lettering. But I also know what’s coming through in this project is going to help elevate my illustrations as well.
I don’t recall what card I pulled for this one (I’m documenting them now), but I remember it was one that felt like blooming and growth to me. It led me to choose to paint a fully open dahlia, focusing on its full bloom.

And because I was really being called to ruminate on my words longer this year. These words came to me pretty quickly and easily, but I was asked to go deeper. I already value these words so much, so I was called to sit with what the next stage of embodying these words looks like. A mastery of sorts.
My theme for 2020 was REWILD (WOBs rooted, spirited, creatrix, bountiful, expansive). It was so good. It’s hard to top. Yet, I felt I wasn’t done with it while also seeing it was ready to transform. So, 2021 is the year of WILD. Sounds the same, and in some ways it is, but in many ways it’s something entirely different.
My supportive ways of being are sacred, intuitive, nourished, expressed, and devoted.
I am wild. I am connected to my truth, to Mother Earth, and the cycles and seasons.
I am sacred. I welcome the sacred and magic in everything.
I am intuitive. I let my intuition and pleasure guide me. I live from creative and feminine flow.
I am nourished. I am taken care of - mind, body, and soul. I am thriving.
I am expressed. I am fully expressed. I am devoted to my voice and artistic expression.
I am devoted. I let my life, my work, my art be an expression of who I am.

The bills. The to-dos. The holiday shopping. It quickly takes over.
This week, I recommitted to starting the day with my sacred practice. It’s great other times of day too, but I wanted to start my day with magic. And I start even before getting out of bed in the morning by asking for the day to be magical. Then I carry the intention through my day and ask myself how each task I approach can be more magical.
I’m breaking free from the ordinary in my work too. Breaking free from the idea that work has to happen behind the computer. And so, I’m sitting in the bath, sipping a cup of tea, candles flickering in the corner, writing this post.
It all gets to be magical. It all gets to be a ritual. Look at the things that make your life feel mediocre or mundane and ask yourself how you can make it more magical and pleasurable, how can you ritualize it.

I’ve noticed over the years as a creator, that there’s a particular time these feelings tend to come up.
It’s when we are not engaged with creating what we want to see in the world that we feel not enough. And that feeling of not-enough-ness leads to us not creating in the first place. It’s a vicious cycle.
The next time you feel like you can’t do something because it’s already been done or you’re comparing yourself or your life to someone else, try channeling that energy into creating. Put your idea to paper. Share with someone. Start making the change you want to see in your life. Give it form in some way. Not only will it help you move through the feelings of inadequacy, but you also get to reap the beauty of your creation.
This is exactly what I did. I spoke my truth in a community I’m in. I shared it with friends and my coach. And it moved me into a much more empowered place. It built the excitement around creating more of what I want to see. One of these things is the YouTube channel I’ve been dreaming of starting. I can’t wait to share with you when it launches.

This year, as we approach the holiday with only the four of us and as our daughter gets older, we’ve decided to do things differently. We’ve chosen to more intentionally decolonize the holiday. We will be spending time outdoors and honoring Mother Nature and the ancestors of the land we inhabit. I will cook because I love to, but we will be cooking differently. I always prioritize local and seasonal foods, and I will be putting that at the forefront rather than the typical turkey dinner. And we will begin to talk with our daughter about the real history behind this country and this holiday.
Every year, we have new opportunities. This year especially we have the opportunity to make our holidays ours instead of defaulting to what’s always been done. How do you truly want to spend this upcoming holiday? What are your values? What matters to you most? How can you reflect those in the way that you honor Thanksgiving? I’d encourage you to take some time in the coming days to also take a look at the December holidays and apply these same questions. This is your life. You get to choose. Wishing you a holiday season that feels like you, spent the way you want to spend it.
